Dear reader,

We would like to tell you about developments in the HTM Panel and the quality of the services we provide. Especially in these unusual times. Because you are a member of the panel, we are sending you this newsletter to keep you up to date.

We hope you enjoy reading it!

The coronavirus pandemic is having many effects on our daily activities. At HTM too, we see that the number of people who are presently travelling by bus or train is a lot less than a year ago. But even in these unusual times, we are glad to hear your impression of travelling with HTM. What is good and what could be better? Will you make a journey by bus or tram in the near future? Do please let us know what you thought of your journey and complete an opinion form. By the way, you can do this very quickly via the HTM journey info app.

Results from HTM pandemic experience survey

At the end of May, you were invited to take part in a survey on your travelling behaviour during the corona pandemic. We asked you for your opinion on various measures. This survey was repeated at the end of September. Around 750 of our passengers took part, which we appreciate! What is clear to see from the results is that public transport is again being used a bit more, also for recreational purposes. Since the previous survey, the use of tram or bus for non-essential journeys is again allowed, and a face mask is mandatory. Somewhat over half of those who took part say they think that a face mask is a (very) good measure (54%), while 29% say they think it is (very) poor.

Once again, passengers were almost all positive about HTM's measures. 86% say the automatic opening of the doors when arriving at a stop is very good. You also say that this does not always happen, alas. In response to the reactions, we have again asked our bus and tram drivers to make sure this happens.

The main thing that upsets those who took part is fellow passengers who do not keep to the coronavirus rules. And we see the feeling of safety during the journey falling. On the other hand, before September, the HTM Panel had never before been so satisfied with the big choice of departure times.

Here are some results from this survey:
  • 74% say they can keep a proper distance at the stop, while 67% think the ‘keep your distance’ floor stickers are (very) good;
  • Only 8% think that the shielding of the tram driver in the red-beige trams, and the bus driver by a cough screen, is (very) poor;
  • 70% want to touch as few things as thay can;
  • 47% of those who replied are afraid of catching the coronavirus, while for 28% this is not so;
  • 45% think that HTM is doing enough to allow the journey by public transport to be made responsibly. 19% do not think so;
  • 32% say that they now work from home more often than they did before the corona crisis (this was 40% earlier this year);
  • 19% (was 24%) do not travel or travel less with HTM because a face mask is mandatory;
  • 58% (was 32%) travel just as often or more with HTM now that a face mask is mandatory.
  • 18% of those who replied have not travelled any more with HTM since the outbreak of the coronavirus.

HTM gives passengers space during the day

In recent months, we noticed that there was less travel during the rush-hour, with more during the day. This is due to changing travelling behaviour caused by the corona crisis. So from 31 August, HTM has been running more trams and buses during the day and fewer during the rush hours. This change has been possible partly because HTM, the MRDH Metropolitan Region and MBO/HBO/WO (secondary schools) have made agreements to match up school times and public transport still more closely. At the end of September, we also asked the HTM Panel for opinions about this measure. No less than 62% of the replies rated it positively.

HTM modifies the timetable

HTM wants to keep offering its passengers reliable services. However, we had to deal with journey cancellations due to the corona pandemic. Some employees had to go into quarantine due to an infection in their surroundings, sick leave, while employees were also absent due to the long waiting times for both the corona test and its results. HTM thinks it is important that everyone can count on their bus or tram at the stated time, and so the timetable needed to be changed. HTM is closely watching how things are going and working out what is needed to keep providing passengers with a dependable timetable. Please visit htm.nl or use the HTM travel info app to see what this means for your travel.

HTM predicts when the bus and tram will be busy

In the last newsletter, we told you about the new crowding indicator. The idea previously scored 8.2/10 from our passengers, and in the most recent HTM pandemic experience survey, 68% rated this aid highly. Due to coronavirus, it has quickly become more important to distribute passengers in public transport. This is why HTM now has a crowding indicator. Using this, on www.htm.nl and in the HTM travel info app, you can get an estimate of whether a tram or bus journey is quiet or busy.
The crowding prediction appears in the travel planners and on the website, so you can choose a quieter journey if you wish. What you get though is an indication, and not real-time information. Sometimes, the actual crowding is different from the prediction.

The predicted crowding appears in the journey planner using a symbol of one or more little people. One person means it is quiet and many seats are free; two people mean the occupation is average, while with three people there is probably only standing room left. HTM will of course keep trying to improve the present crowding indicator.

Share opinions of journeys even more easily via the HTM journey info app

As a participant in the HTM Panel, you regularly receive an invitation to evaluate your journey by tram or bus. Did you know that this is also possible via the HTM travel info app? This has now become even easier. In the app, go to Customer Service, and choose the option ‘Had a Good Journey?’. This lets you share your findings with HTM while still on your journey.
