Coronavirus measures at HTM

First of all, we hope that you are in good health as you read this newsletter. The consequences of the measures taken by the government because of coronavirus are having an enormous impact on our daily lives. A lot has changed at HTM too in recent weeks. Our timetable has been drastically modified, for instance. HTM is doing everything it possibly can in these exceptional circumstances to make sure that everyone working in a vital sector can keep using the trams or buses. So that they can still rely on them, even in these times. We are thinking of the safety of our staff and passengers, of course. The front doors of our buses and red-and-beige trams are not being opened, for instance. Our trams and buses stop at every stop and doors are opened automatically. We ask passengers who do not work in a vital sector only to travel by public transport where necessary, to postpone their journey if possible, or to use another form of transport (such as their own bicycle or a bike-sharing scheme). We ask passengers travelling by tram or bus to observe the government’s guidelines with respect to social distancing, wait for the next bus or tram if necessary, or work from home. HTM is taking additional measures where possible and necessary.

During this period, we have been getting many more responses from our passengers than usual, saying how much they appreciate what we are doing. Thank you for that!

Do you need to travel by public transport?

Although we very much appreciate your business, we are asking you now to postpone your journey if it is not necessary or to use another form of transport (such as your own bicycle or a bike-sharing scheme). To be clear: you should not make a journey just so that you can evaluate it.
If you do have to go by public transport, please allow for the following:
  • Keep your distance from others (at least 1.5 metres) in the trams and buses, at the stops, and when getting on and off.
  • The trams and buses stop at every stop. The tram driver or bus driver opens the doors for you. So there is no need any more to press the buttons to ask for it to stop or to open the doors.
  • More information about the routes and timetables can be found on www.htm.nl.
HTM is doing extra cleaning on the trams and buses, including points of contact such as the ticket machines and the hand-hold straps. We have also added Plexiglas protection around the cabs of the tram and bus drivers in our city buses and red-and-beige trams. It is important for HTM that we keep our staff fit and healthy, protecting them as well as possible against the coronavirus during their work.

The HTM Panel talks with us about the new website

The new HTM website went live on 24 March. We presented the ideas to sixteen HTM Panel members in January. The participants varied in age and were selected from nearly 300 people who had said they were interested. In a face-to-face interview that took about one hour, the participants were asked various questions and given a couple of small tasks. Some of the comments they made:

  • The new website is calmer than the old one. The homepage looks nice – calm and more professional, suitable for HTM.
  • The important parts that were mentioned most often were the journey planner and construction work/disruptions
  • Various panellists said that they use the HTM planner for journeys in The Hague but the ones from NS or OV9292 for journeys outside The Hague. They were not aware that the HTM journey planner also has information for journeys outside our transport area.
If this has made you curious, come and take a look on www.htm.nl

Study of the summer peak line 3k 4k

Last summer, a tram ran at peak hours for the first time on a combined tram 3/tram 4 route. This peak line will run again this coming summer. At HTM, we would like to know how we can draw attention to this service better or differently this year.
Because we think it is important to involve passengers in improving our services, we asked the HTM Panel. In the end, 735 completed questionnaires were returned to us. A great result! Of the respondents, 65% did not know about the summer peak line that ran last year. Additionally, a majority of the people who answered wanted the summer peak line to get its own number. Most of them preferred the number 34 for it. This coming summer, HTM will therefore introduce the peak tram number 34 and we will give it its own timetable, so that passengers can easily identify it
Compliment: “The tram ran a different route because of a demonstration by farmers at Malieveld. The driver told the passengers nicely about what was happening and the alternatives.” (Tram 16 to Wateringen, 1 October 2019)

Sign on the tram:
"Ladies and gentlemen, I’m taking a different route from the Gravenstraat stop. Passengers for The Hague Central Station can change over at Centrum."

Newsletter archive

This is the first newsletter of 2020. Along with older ones, as of now you can read this newsletter whenever you like. This lets new HTM Panel members see what the panel did in the past. The number of people taking part has now gone above 2,000. We are very pleased with that. After all, every opinion counts.
